Darkness has overtaken natural light (represented in the background). The candle represents artificial light- all that is man made. The demon in attempt to blow the flame on the candle represents different factors in life and all distractions.

A distressed man hangs oneself and quickly realizes, in struggle, as in life, that he has made yet another mistake. In an attempt to reach, with his elongated hand, and regain control of life by grabbing the artificial light, he weeps, unintentionally, smothering the flame on the candle.
